Jerry Beck's latest projects. 8:54 pm EST
From Jon Cooke's LT & MM site comes
an updated word from author Jerry Beck:
I'm a producer for a new syndicated half-hour cartoon show called TOTALLY TOONED IN, which uses
Columbia's UPA cartoons (Mr. Magoo, Gerald McBoing Boing, etc.) along with the Screen Gems cartoons of the
30s & 40s (Fox & Crow, Scrappy, Li'l Abner, etc). The Screen Gems cartoons are being beautifully restored
from original negatives and include work by Warner directors Frank Tashlin, Art Davis, Ub Iwerks, etc. Mel
Blanc and many other voices familiar to WB cartoon fans are heard on the soundtracks and WB producers Ray
Katz & Henry Binder, writer Dave Monahan and many other WB personnel worked for Screen Gems. We are
hoping this show will appear on the CARTOON NETWORK later this year -- but as of today a deal has not
been reached. If fans want to see this on CN, let them know! Separately, I'm about to begin work on a "special" for the CARTOON NETWORK called LOST WARNER BROS. CARTOONS. I'll send you more details about this later, but the plan is to combine the lost odds and ends (SNAFU, HOOK, SO MUCH FOR SO LITTLE, ADVENTURES OF THE ROAD RUNNER, PHILBERT, BOSKO THE TALK-INK KID, DRAFTY ISN'T IT, ORANGE BLOSSOMS FOR VIOLET, and much more) into one entertaining show. Warner cartoon fans will love it! |
Tweety Videos Seen in Stores! 8:54 pm EST
The new Tweety videos are now appearing in stores and are shipping from Amazon.com. I have already purchased and
viewed my copies and at the beginning of each video is a short cartoon in which many of the Looney Tunes

Animation World Network is reporting that later this summer Warner
Bros. is moving its feature animation division to the home of Warner TV animation in Sherman Oaks, California.
Warner has also announced that Warner TV Animation President Jean MacCurdy will now supervise the production of Warner's
animated features, as well as continuing supervision on their TV shows. Both units are expected to move next year into
a new animation production facility currently under construction in what used to be the Sherman Oaks Galleria shopping mall.
The Galleria was a popular mall in the '80s where they shot many films like "FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH".

Here's a few more details, as promised, about the forthcoming VHS tape
set LOONEY TUNES: THE COLLECTORS EDITION from Columbia House. This is a new compilation of Warner Bros. cartoons, uncut, available only through direct-mail from Columbia House. They will be made available starting in AUGUST 1999 -- and there will be plenty of advertising, so everyone will hear about it in ample time. There will be approximately 13 or 14 cartoons per tape. The choice of cartoons on each tape is being done by committee. I have my two cents in there but if I had free reign, things might be a little different. As it stands, these are excellent compilations, and if sales warrant it, this series could go on for a very long time, making some very hard to get cartoons available for the first time. These tapes will ONLY be available through Columbia House and will NEVER be sold in stores. We are currently at work on the first ten volumes. I will reveal the contents of the first two tapes, at this time. These are really all I can confirm at the moment:

Live-Action Looney Movies . 3:35 pm EST
The recent success of big screen live-action versions of cartoon characters like George of the Jungle as well as the
potential of the upcoming Rocky and Bullwinkle and Dudley Do-Right as well as licensing potential hasn't been lost
on Warner Bros. Now, plans are afoot for the studio to finally take advantage of the goldmine they hold
themselves: the Looney Tunes characters. According to the Hollywood Reporter, at least three feature film
projects are rumored to be in the works using the characters. The first would involve a live-action/animated
production featuring Bugs Bunny possibly starring with Robin Williams. The trade is reporting that the film would
be along the lines of the teaming of Gene Kelly and Jerry Mouse from MGM's classic Anchors Aweigh than
something like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. There's also talk of a live-action Tasmanian Devil movie as well as a
Space Jam-like feature using the entire stable of characters.

Calling all disgruntled animators.
This could be an April Fools Day joke but, a call has been put out to all animators in the LA area to attend The Great
Alliance. It's a mass meeting for animation artists who are disgruntled by the current state of the industry (of which there is a lot
to be disgruntled about). Artists are getting layed off every day at a time when there is more animation being produced than
ever. The gathering takes place on Thursday, April 1, from 1-4 p.m. at the Sportsmen's Lodge on Ventura Blvd. and Coldwater Canyon Road in Studio City,
California. Everybody is welcome: living legends, Union/non-union, old timers, feature, commercial and TV artists, employed/unemployed, students and
teachers. This is a grass roots effort helmed by an artist named Charles Zembillas who runs an animation school in Burbank, California called the Animation
Academy. Not much is known about him but we've discovered that he is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He developed original conceptual designs for
AN AMERICAN TAIL, was Art Director for the WHERE ON EARTH IS CARMEN SAN DIEGO? TV series and art directed, developed, designed and co-created Sony's CRASH BANDICOOT. The
website which explains the purpose of this event and has a discussion board is at www.animationnation.com.

"This June, we will release two all-new compilations of Tweety, which will include several of the cartoons you suggested in your
letter. Further, we are currently planning to release all-new Bugs Bunny compilations in October."
He also mentioned that new Road Runner compilations are in the works, but not for 1999 release. And he also mentioned the Columbia House videos, but didn't offer any info that we didn't know about already. What he meant by cartoons that I suggested in my letter, in the letter I simply suggested ideas on what cartoons should be on the next videos, based on what hasn't been released onto VHS and based on just reading this board and noting which cartoons everyone here would like to see. :) As far as the Tweety cartoons I "requested," it was pretty much a list of the classics that were left, like "Red Riding Hoodwinked," "Tweety's Circus," "Gift Wrapped," etc."
WOW! New RR & Wile compilations, I can't wait!
Here's What's Coming Doc...

"Some good news happened today. MGM/UA Home Video NO LONGER has the rights to Turner's library. They ended the deal early. This means that Warner
Bros. owns the Warner Cartoons (1930-present) and the POPEYE cartoons, lock stock & barrel. This means that it is in the hands of Warner Home Video
to issue discs, tapes, DVD's of this product. Image, MGM/UA, Turner are no longer entities for fan praise or rage. I am discussing future possibilities
with them, so hang in there... MORE NEWS TO COME! Also, the deal with MGM/UA is "officially" over Jan. 31, 2000 -- but plans are being made NOW!!!"

Hawley Pratt, WB layout artist has died!
Noticed this post on the alt.animation.warner-bros newsgroup, a snippet is posted
below. You can view the entire post via a news reader or your browser, courtesy of Dejanews.
Author: gregory duffell <lightbox@idirect.com>
I'm sad to report that Mr. Hawley Pratt, the great Warner Brothers layout artist, who worked predominantly under the direction of Friz Freleng, has
died.
Mr. Pratt is officially credited with directing one Warner cartoon, the last made before the 1963 shutdown, "Senorella and the Glass Huarache". He
also directed "Hollywood Daffy" when Friz was suspended after a dispute with management. Hawley worked on all of Friz' Academy Award winning cartoons
and was nominated in 1966 for the cartoon "The Pink Blueprint".
During the early 1960's, Hawley assumed "co-director" status as the busy Warner Brothers Cartoons Inc. tackled theatrical shorts, educational
films, commercials and the link segments for the "Bugs Bunny Show".

HEIDI MACDONALD JOINS DC AS EDITOR OF WARNER BROS. AND CARTOON NETWORK TITLES
"I'm thrilled," says MacDonald, who begins her DC career on March 22. "I already know almost everyone at the company, and finally getting to work
more closely with them is going to be a blast. I've already discovered that working with the Warner Bros.' and Cartoon Network characters has
boosted my indie street cred -- these are the hippest, coolest cartoon characters out there, and I think they'll be a great match for my personality."
MacDonald began her comics career over fifteen years ago as a critic for The Comics Journal, writing columns and opinion pieces for TCJ as well as
Amazing Heroes and Comics Buyer's Guide, and she soon gained a reputation as a trusted critic and respected scholar of the comic book medium.
After a stint at The Hollywood Reporter, MacDonald started at Disney Adventures in 1991 as Assistant Editor. Recognizing her special talents,
the magazine made her Comics Editor in 1993, and during her long and fruitful reign over the magazine's comics pages, she brought a range of
diverse work from comics' brightest talents, including Evan Dorkin and Jeff Smith, to the view of hundreds of thousands of Disney Adventures
readers. She was also named one of Hero magazine's "100 Most Important People in Comics" for two years running, and bettered her score by making
Combo magazine's "20 Most Powerful People in the Comics Industry" list.
In 1993 MacDonald also co-founded The Friends of Lulu, a nonprofit organization aimed at getting more women involved in comics, and has
served on the organization's board for four years. In addition, she served two terms on the board of directors of CAPS (The Comic Art
Professionals Society) and was a founding board member of the Comic Book Professionals Association. She has appeared on television and radio
numerous times to speak about comics and gender issues, and co-produced her own cable TV show for three years. And in addition to all of this, MacDonald
has also won awards for her comedy writing, starred in her own cabaret act, and has written for such mainstream publications as The LA Weekly, CMJ and TV Guide.
"Having Heidi here at DC just makes total sense," says Mike Carlin, Executive Editor of the DC Universe. "In fact, we've known each other so
long I thought she worked here already. Heidi brings with her almost two decades of experience in diverse areas of the comics industry, and she
knows, either personally or professionally, virtually everyone who works within it. I'm sure she will quickly prove to be invaluable part of our operation."
DC Comics is pleased to announce that it has hired Heidi MacDonald, Senior Comics Editor of Disney Adventures, as the new editor for the Warner Bros.
animated and the Cartoon Network families of titles. According to DC's Executive Vice President & Publisher Paul Levitz, "Heidi's skill at using
comics to reach kids, and her love of the medium, are both well known. She's a perfect candidate to take on editing two of the great libraries of
comic characters, and we look forward to her joining the DC team."

Also NOT LT, Heavy Metal 2: F.A.K.K.
Do you remember HEAVY METAL? The animated sci-fi toon done to rock and roll? Well, they are making a sequel called Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. and here is some information on it
that I found at Animation Blast web site:
Eighties rocker Billy Idol is provided a lead voice in Sceneries Entertainment's HEAVY METAL: F.A.K.K. 2. The film is going to be distributed domestically by Columbia TriStar sometime this fall. Based on a graphic novel, THE MELTING POT, created by Kevin Eastman (co-creator of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES), Simon Bisley and Eric Talbot; the movie tells the story of an immortal female warrior, F.A.K.K. who seeks revenge on the genocidal Tyler (voiced by Idol). The film is directed by Mitch Lemire and Michael Coldewey. The soundtrack also features music feature by Axel Rose, Sammy Hagar and the Stone Temple Pilots. |
News From Jerry Beck!!
Jon Cooke's LT Info page is reporting on some news he got via E-mail from LT Author Jerry Beck :
Thanks to Mr. Beck, here is an update on the upcoming Columbia House Looney Tunes Collector's Edition and a new project that might be coming to Cartoon Network in the future. "Regardless, (and OFF THE RECORD) The Columbia House project is a reality, pushed back (as I understand it) to July release. As soon as I have concrete details I will email you, but so far I still know as much as I did a few months ago. I know they are designing the package design. This could be a MAJOR event for collectors... Meanwhile... I HAVE A NEW SECRET PROJECT: I also have to keep my lips sealed a few more weeks on an exciting Cartoon Network project involving "rare" Warner Bros. cartoons. Sorry to drop such a tantilizing hint, but I'm excited by this new possibility-- and fellow WB cartoon fans will be too! I will break the news to you as soon as the deal is signed (and if it all falls apart, I'll spill the beans (no pun intended) as well). I should have details to reveal before the end of March. AND LASTLY: There is no new BOOK news to report." |

'The following is a guide to the cuts and edits which have been made to the classic cartoons of Warner Bros., MGM,
Paramount, and other studios when broadcast on television (unless noted otherwise). Gags that are considered
inappropriate for children, racist, violent, etc. are simply edited out. This serves as a guide to these "lost" moments.'
